Every year on June 15, World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) is commemorated in America and worldwide. Through WEAAD, we raise awareness about the millions of older adults who experience elder abuse, neglect, and financial exploitation. As many as 1 in 10 older Americans are abused or neglected each year, and only 1 in 14 elder abuse cases ever come to authorities’ attention. Older Americans are vital, contributing members of our society, and their abuse or neglect diminishes all of us. WEAAD reminds us that, as in a just society, we all have a critical role to play in focusing attention on elder justice.

To educate, empower and protect Carroll County residents from financial exploitation, abuse, or neglect, the

  • Carroll County Bureau of Aging and Disabilities
  • Carroll County Department of Social Services, and
  • Carroll County State’s Attorney’s Office

are partnering for a special event in celebration of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.

The attendees will hear from expert panelists about:

  • How to protect yourself against fraud and scams targeted at older adults
  • Tips on how to use wills and estate planning to protect your assets
  • The role of Adult Protective Services (APS) in protecting vulnerable adults
  • Caregiver support tools and programs
  • Long-term care ombudsman advocacy for nursing home and assisted living residents
  • Where and how to report suspected elder abuse

A catered lunch will be provided by Mountain Gate Family Restaurant. Registration is required.
