Westminster, MD, Wednesday, April 10, 2019 – Today, Carroll County is pleased to announce the Finksburg community received a Sustainable Community Designation from the State of Maryland Smart Growth Subcommittee. The Carroll County Department of Planning, in conjunction with the Finksburg Planning and Citizens Council, applied and was awarded the special designation.

The Finksburg Sustainable Community Designation gives property owners access to funds and expertize to increase redevelopment and visually improve the corridor. Property owners are now eligible to apply for financing and tax credit programs and other incentives for the Finksburg Area offered through the state’s Revitalization Toolbox.

The Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development describes the program as “a place-based designation offering a comprehensive package of resources that support holistic strategies for community development, revitalization and sustainability. Led by the Department, Sustainable Communities has provided local governments with a framework for promoting environmentally, economically and socially responsible growth and development in existing older communities.”

The Finksburg corridor is also a Priority Funding Area, and one of two Designated Growth Areas in Carroll County. The Sustainable Community Area encompasses the majority of the Priority Funding Area while excluding the Heavy Industrial land to the north, and a small area to the south. A map of the Finksburg Sustainable Community Boundary is here. For more information on how to take advantage of incentives please contact the Carroll County Department of Planning at (410) 386-5145.
