Westminster, MD, Thursday, June 6, 2019  – The Board of County Commissioners proclaimed June 6th, 2019 as 29th Infantry Division Day in recognition of the 75th Anniversary of the D-Day Landing, and presented the proclamation today during the board’s open session.  Maryland State Delegate Haven Shoemaker, District 5, Carroll County, also read a state proclamation during the ceremony.

The proclamation reads:

WHEREAS, the 29th Infantry Division was founded in 1917 with regiments from Maryland and Virginia, for service in World War I, and fought bravely in Alsace and Meuse Argonne Campaigns in France; and

WHEREAS, the 29th Infantry Division was, again, called into federal service on February 3, 1941 for World War II; and

WHEREAS, the 29th Infantry Division played a decisive role when it became part of the first and second wave of the U. S. assault forces on Omaha Beach, Normandy, France on June 6, 1944, known as D-Day. The D-Day landings turned the tide of World War II and marked the beginning of the end for Nazi Germany; and

WHEREAS, the 29th Infantry Division fought in campaigns through Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe until final victory on May 11, 1945; and

WHEREAS,  as America marks the 75th Anniversary of the D-Day landings into World War II, many of the veterans and their families will visit the Normandy American Cemetery, the final resting place for over 9,300 United States servicemen.  Commemorative services will also be observed in the United States of America for the 75th Anniversary of the D-Day landings; and

WHEREAS, hundreds of veterans of the 29th Division, as well as many more who form the present-day 29th Division Association, have served in the Global War on Terrorism and who are still serving the communities of Carroll County, Maryland, the Nation, at home and overseas.

Several Veterans, who served in the 29th Infantry Division, were on hand for the proclamation ceremony.
