The environment benefits from the use of compost bins and rain barrels in numerous ways. Composting diverts organic materials such as kitchen waste from the trash can to the compost bin and out of the landfill. Compost reduces the need for chemical fertilizers. By amending soil with rich nutrient compost, gardens produce bigger, healthier plants and veggies. Rain barrels divert water from storm drains, decreasing the impact of runoff to streams and minimizing sewer overflows during heavy rainfalls. Additionally, using a rain barrel can reduce water demand during summer months, preserve a natural resource, and save homeowners money on water bills.
Do your part by pre-ordering your own rain barrel and compost bin online at www.enviroworld.com/carrollcountymd by April 5, 2026. For more information, contact the Carroll County Government Office of Recycling Operations at recycling@carrollcountymd.gov or 410-386-2510.
