Westminster, MD, Thursday, May 14, 2026– Carroll County and most of Central Maryland continue to experience drier-than-normal conditions. The Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) has affirmed the region is currently in a Drought Warning Stage, one step below Drought Emergency.

MDE and Carroll County ask residents to be cognizant of the current situation and voluntarily reduce water usage.

MDE’s website provides a list of water conservation measures and an easy-to-follow fact sheet about water preservation for family homes, businesses, and industry, including restaurants and commercial buildings.

Many municipalities in Carroll County are either implementing or considering local conservation measures.  Residents are advised to monitor communications from their local municipalities for the latest updates.

Earlier today, the City of Baltimore issued a press release requesting voluntary water restrictions across the region due to low water levels in Liberty Reservoir. Mayor Brandon Scott said in the press release, “to protect our regional water supply, we are urging residents and businesses across Baltimore City and Baltimore, Harford, Howard, and Carroll counties to use water wisely as we head into the summer months, when water demand typically increases.”

The Freedom Area of Carroll County, including the town of Sykesville, relies on Liberty Reservoir for its drinking water and is therefore part of the affected regions. Carroll County officials will continue to collaborate with regional partners and monitor water supply conditions.

Recommended Water Conservation Measures

  • Postpone lawn and garden watering
  • Avoid car, boat, or equipment washing
  • Refrain from washing outdoor surfaces like sidewalks and driveways
  • Repair or replace leaking faucets, hoses, and sprinklers
  • Run only full loads in dishwashers and washing machines
  • Turn off taps while brushing teeth or shaving

Leaks are one of the largest sources of water waste. Carroll County and surrounding jurisdictions are committed to doing their part by repairing water main breaks and system leaks promptly. Residents are encouraged to help by promptly reporting any signs of running water that may indicate a leak or water main break.
